Our mission
The Madison Center for American Conservatism exists to form Americans capable of self-government. We believe a free republic depends on people who take responsibility for their own conduct and exercise sound judgment in their common affairs. Our constitutional conservatism affirms that government exists to secure individual rights, preserving the freedom to pursue virtue and develop one’s abilities. We prepare capable leaders to carry these convictions into public life. Through their work, we seek to strengthen the American people’s capacity to preserve their liberties and govern themselves.
Self-government asks citizens to understand consequential questions, exercise independent judgment, explain their convictions, and engage disagreement seriously. These capacities develop through deliberate practice.
Who the Center serves
We serve Americans who feel a responsibility to contribute to public life and are willing to develop the abilities that responsibility requires. We especially seek emerging leaders whose potential needs the preparation and relationships to find public expression. The Center brings together people at different stages of development who are prepared to study seriously, accept honest criticism, and take responsibility for work that serves others.

How the work comes together
Formation
Understanding into ability
Statesmanship requires sound judgment supported by knowledge and governed by character. Formation develops an understanding of constitutional government and the ideas that shape public life, alongside the ability to reason carefully and communicate persuasively. We ask members to test their convictions against evidence and take opposing arguments seriously. Our aim is to cultivate the prudence to judge what circumstances require and the moral courage to act responsibly, with humility about the limits of one’s knowledge and authority.

Ability into contribution
The Forum carries the Center’s work into public life through carefully argued writing and substantive discussion. Members apply their understanding to questions of government and society, developing their work through editorial review before publication. Authors take responsibility for the claims they advance and invite others to examine their reasoning. Through this exchange, the Forum gives capable voices a wider audience and contributes to the public understanding upon which self-government depends.

Individuals into community
Membership brings together people who take responsibility for their own development and invest in the development of others. We seek a community in which members challenge one another honestly and follow through on shared commitments. Trust grows through reliability and useful contribution. The relationships formed here should sustain members as they undertake greater responsibilities and use their abilities in service of their communities.
Meet the leadershipLeadership and organization
The Center is developing a national network connected through regional leadership and campus chapters. National leadership sets direction and maintains common standards, while regional and chapter leaders support members and organize local work. Members can also participate directly in the national community, contributing through the Forum and working with others wherever they live.
The Founder determines national board membership. A national presidency does not by itself confer a board seat.
