About the Center
Developed understanding. Clear expression. The capacity to work constructively with others.
Our mission
The Madison Center for American Leadership exists to form Americans capable of self-governance. We help citizens develop the understanding, practical abilities, and relationships needed for thoughtful, articulate, and responsible leadership in public life.
Self-government asks citizens to understand consequential questions, exercise independent judgment, explain their convictions, and engage disagreement seriously. These capacities develop through deliberate practice.
The Center serves people motivated to contribute to public life and ready to develop their abilities. Some need deeper knowledge; others need practice expressing what they know. All can benefit from serious peers, constructive criticism, and opportunities to undertake meaningful work together.
Examine ideas, institutions, evidence, and competing accounts. Learn to reach judgments you can explain.
Practice constructing a case, responding to objections, and making difficult ideas clear to different audiences.
Find peers who challenge your thinking, bring complementary abilities, and take shared work seriously.
Make demonstrated abilities visible through writing, thoughtful discussion, and responsible service.

Meet the leadershipThe Center’s intended organization connects national, regional, and campus communities. Formation, Membership, and the Forum carry distinct responsibilities. Actual regional and chapter records will be presented as they are confirmed.
The Founder determines national board membership. A departmental presidency does not by itself confer a board seat.
